I didn’t write about my journey into Innsbruck yesterday because I thought it would be unremarkable, but boy was I wrong.

I’m headed all the way from Venice to Innsbruck by train, through the Italian countryside and then into the Austrian mountains. Was it ever something else.

When the train arrives in Brenner, a small town right on the border of Italy and Austria, it stops for about 15 minutes, and police walk up and down the train, I guess as a customs check.

Outside my window, I notice a white substance I was hoping I wouldn’t see again.

Fortunately as the train makes its way further into Austria, the snow disappears and is replaced with beautiful mountains that the tracks weave between.

I make my way to my hostel and check in. I booked a dormitory room with 6 beds. It’s my first time staying in a dormitory so I’m a bit worried, but this one seems manageable.

A British guy named Jack checks in at the same time as me, and we agree to go out for pizza dinner, and walk around the city a bit.

Austrian pizza is pretty good, but French pizza is still my favourite!

Unfortunately I do end up getting the ultimate hostel experience, where the guy in the bed next to mine mutters loudly in his sleep, and keeps me up all night.

In the morning, I grab breakfast at a local bakery, then catch up on some work in the common area of the hostel.

While I’m working, I meet a person who’s looking to move to Innsbruck, and another who’s a software developer like me.

I get out by the afternoon when it’s warmed up a bit and walk around town. The clouds have also cleared up more, so I snap some more pictures of the snow-capped mountains that surround the area.

They have a bike share system here for €1 / 30 mins, so I bike around the city a bit.

I’m still feeling a bit sick, so I go for comfort food with a Chinese noodle soup. It looks better than it tastes, but it’s still nice to have something warm in my belly.
